Irish Moss?

Has anyone tried using live Irish moss for a subrate? I know you would have to get it well established first but once it is established it doesn't need as much water as most mosses. The only possible problem I see is lighting and possibly fertilizing. Any thoughts.?

You know my snakes won't have anything to do with any kind of moss...which is odd considering they are WC and there is all kinds of moss outside here. If I put it in their viv...they won't go near it.

I use the forest moss brick by zoomed but im gonna switch to spagnum. Moss is great you can use in clumps as a hide and at the same time you can spray it to raise humidity and it dries out quickly, mixed with woodchips works great or use it by itself

Steve I would spot clean and rinse for quick spot checks and I would also utilize a drainage layer with a plug on the bottom of the tank so I could routinly "wash" the substrate. It is something I have had succes with in my terrariums that house my Melanophryniscus stelzneri, the washing that is not the moss. It allows me to rinse often without building up the moisture levels too much. My only concern with that would be the stripping the small amount of soil I would use of what it needs to sustain that much moss.

I guess that would be the ultimate deciding factor, but if they don't like it I am sure I something that would. I just don't know if it is a good choice or not. Something I did find out about moss is that a lot of the types from colder regions need a dormant cooling period to do well, a lot like garters I guess.

My old Dekayi tank had a sheet of moss I peeled off a rock, they loved it.
