    What does it look like?

If you have not seen a snake go in or out of a hole. How do you know what a snke den looks like. My mom and dad have a semi large hole in there back part of an acre land. and I dont know if it is another kind of an animal or a snake den. How am I sopposed to know what it is? Or is the only way to know is to see a snake go in or out. Do snakes take over other animals dens or how does that work. I can take a pic of the whole or have my mom do that so I can post it later. But I am wondering what they might look like. Thank you.

You've kind of answered your own question.
Yes. Snakes in general, not just garter snake use other animal's burrows.
Seeing them come and go would be the only was you're going to be able to identify it as a den.
The Red Sided den I visit is an old burrow.
Here's a link to my thread about that den. It will give you an idea what it look like.
