The open period is all but finished. I used to work for the Govt. and I can tell you that for 99.9% of the jobs they post, they already know who they are going to hire before they post it and it is usually filled from within, meaning the hired person already works for the Govt.

The order of preference goes like this among qualified applicants:

1- already working for the Govt get first consideration

2 - outside applicant who is a veteran of war / combat service

3 outside applicant with military service record of any kind

    4 finally, everyone else

The salary, considering it's in CA especially, suggests to me that not much in the way of special education or training is required. They would probably train a combat veteran with any education beyond high school before they would hire a college graduate who is more qualified.

I´m curious that it is a job of US Geological Survey,
instead of Fish and Wildlife Service.

Re: How bad do you want this job?!?! (Hint: USGS & Giant Garters in California)

I started typing out an answer and decided I should just copy and paste from the web sites.

"The USGS is a science organization that provides impartial information on the health of our ecosystems and environment, the natural hazards that threaten us, the natural resources we rely on, the impacts of climate and land-use change, and the core science systems that help us provide timely, relevant, and useable information."

    Fish and wildlife

"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a Bureau in the Department of Interior. Our mission is, working with others to conserve,..."

What they really mean is, they are the administration (like corporate office bosses) to serve by making and enforcing laws to protect wildlife. The US Geological Survey just carries out the scientific work. (skilled labor to carry out the work)

All that fish and wildlife needs to know is a the data from the survey. Then they can make the official US Govt decisions and make policies on how best to protect the snakes, all wildlife, and human interests.

    curious:
wikipedia:Geology (from the Greek γῆ, , "earth" and λόγος, logos, "study")
What means fossils are the closest contact of a geologist to living enviroment who is (simplified) studying stones.
