    Vets we recommend!

Members, we all share one thing in common.., a passion and interest for garters. But in a time of need when we are seeking urgent medical care for a garter that may be ill or injured, who do we go to? I know there are various online sites that list reptile vets but I would prefer to take my garter to a vet that another member here has taken theirs to and recommends. Knowing what vet to go to, I feel, is an important matter.

    State: Texas
    City: San Antonio
Vet's Name: Dr. Melissa Hill (Kirby Animal Hospital)
Address/Contact number to Vet Facility: 4623 Binz Engleman, San Antonio
    (210) 661-6717 http://kirbyanimalhospital.com/home.html
Costs: I believe it was 40 dollars for an office visit (they gave discounts on follow up visits with my cat so I would suspect similar if you needed it for the snake)
Comments: Her vet specialty is Avian and exotic Species. That does not mean they cant treat your cats and dogs too. I would bring all my animals there. They are very good at what they do there and they will actually call in the other vet they have there to go over blood work to get two sets of eyes on it to make sure they didnt miss anything.

If I were still in San Antonio this is the only vet I would use.

I second the vote for Dr. Feinsod. He handles dogs and cats too but he also does exotics like birds and reptiles and is VERY involved in reptile rescue. ( He also ADORES GARTERS! ) He likes seeing me come in. I always end up bringing him something interesting. A general health check for a snake is $37.00 and you can't beat that with a stick!

    Southwest Washington Portland/Vancouver metro area:

This is the only vet I can recommend for reptiles. Many other vets from around town will turn you down and refer you to this guy when you bring in a snake or lizard:

    Dr. Jud Witherspoon, DVM

    Veterinary School: Washington State University
Dr. Jud Witherspoon founded the East Mill Plain Animal Hospital in Vancouver, WA in 1983. He graduated cum laude from Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980 and holds a B.A. from Whitman College graduating summa cum laude in 1973 with a B.S. from Washington State University in 1975.

VCA East Mill Plain Animal Hospital | Veterinarians

When it comes to things as routine and simple as fecal exams and prescribing of appropriate deworming medication in proper doses for your small reptiles, you can go to Companion Pet Clinic and save a bundle. They just need fresh fecal samples, to know that it is a reptile, and the exact weight of your animal. They don't need to actually see the animal. When it comes to serious illness, injury, or surgery, go to Dr. Witherspoon at East Mill Plain Animal Hospital for sure. Just don't tell him it's a garter snake and he won't have to tell you that he can't treat them by WA law. Tell him it's a ribbon snake, and even if he knows better, he'll treat it.
