Talking Difference in Genus: E.Black Necks vs. others?

HI - looking for everyone to help me make a choice...my son wants an eastern black neck, i think they're great looking snakes. I read some various things though that they tend to be more finicky than some of the other types of garters being primarily amphb. eaters? And any noticable differences in their behavior / handling vs others?

Anyone who ones one please chime in?

I've raised boas and pythons and they're so easy to feed i'm looking for something with the least potential for trouble eating since daddy will be doing all the care taking

    Thanks in advance

they can definitely be more finicky eaters, however there are several breeders that should have babies. captive born babies can do ok once they are feeding good. There are also plenty of other species of garters that are easier to care for and not as finicky (and a little cheaper).

    Not to mention more "handleable"

I can't speak for everyone, but mine is a squirrelly snake.

plains garters are very easy to maintain, along with easterns and oregon red spots.

i personally like plains they feed well and are wonderful to handle even the little babies! they also come in some interesting color morphs at a reasonable price (i personally like nebraska albino plains there purple and yellow when you see them in person!)

I do like the plains look - i could almost pass the normal plains off as an eastern black neck to my 5yo... they look kind of similar.

I think i'm making some headway here....So they have different diet interests than the blacknecks? Easier to switch to pinkies and easier to handle?

blacknecks are more of an amphibian eater, but will eat other foods. plains will eat fish, worms, amphibians and easily switched to rodents. they are very tame too.

What baby normal plains do you have available and is it safe to ship this time of year?

I have normals that carry the albino gene, and normals that carry the red phase gene. generally overnight shipping is good, just got to watch temps and use ice packs for cooling if needed.

I should also have some normal babies with no odd genes soon.
