    Does Size Matter To You?

I've been involved in snakes for just over a year and I've noticed something from the forums and the shows I've gone to. Corns, kings and milks seem to be introductory to the snake owning public before you move on to the really big stuff, ya know the LARGE SNAKES.

I really don't care about the bigger breeds. ( I think this reassures my hubby! ) I tell my family and friends that I have no interest in owning anything big enough to eat your dog, cat or kid! The general public seems to think the only snakes people keep as pets are the real big ones! There's plenty of interesting snakes out there that never get that big. I personally would LOVE to try ringnecks but everything I've read says they're too fragile and do not take well to captivity.

    What does everyone else feel?

I have heard the same thing about ringnecks. I've had them brought to me and I release right away unless there is a medical issue. If they need it I provide what I can or take them to my Vet. Once they are better I release them. Here in Iowa they are protected.
They are beautiful and I wish I could have them.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.

I had a ringneck, and she did fine - eventually escaped during a move
they do tend to burrow, and I think when it comes to smaller snakes, the dekayi are more outgoing

It's simple ... the bigger snakes don't attract me enough ... Plus I wouldn't consider myself very caring if I didn't provide anything as big as a room to any large snake as housing (even a boa constrictor) .... so by my own standards I will never own one of the big snakes.
Keeping - 'Florida blue' sirtalis, concinnus, infernalis, parietalis, radix, marcianus and ocellatus.

I see what you are saying but I personally know A LOT of people and breeders who only keep colubrids and even small colubrids specifically. They are my main interest although I do own a Dumerils boa and may eventually get a few more large snakes. I think eveybody just has there own tastes in snakes and some people get a kick out of having the biggest snake around. lol Definitely cool but not everybody's thing.

And although they don't seem to show themselves much if possibly avoidable, ringnecks seem fairly hardy from my experience.

Never had any interest in the big snakes, all of ours are 4 feet and under. Many are way under

I'm another that just doesn't have an interest in owning any of the larger snakes. I find them spectacular and enjoy seeing them, but I'd rather have smaller, more active snakes.
