    tank on its side

has anyone ever taken a tank and put it on its side so the top opening would actually be the front? i got a 20 gallon long here but the shelf i wanna put it on it to tall to access the top safely and i was thinking of putting it on its side and making a fold out lid for it but i have no idea if a tank could handle being on its side

A few of our members do this. I know that Kyle (Zephyr) has put some serious effort into making this work.

Should work without any trouble. Make a hinged screen front for it and it will be great.

a 20 long I would say could easily lay on its side. They do make hinged screen tops for a 20 long, and with 2 sets of clamps, (1 for bottom of the lid one for top) you could secure it very tight and it should work very well!!!

Here is a 30 gal. I put on its side for my crested geckos. I'm not sure I would trust these cage clips to be secure enough for a garter snake, but if you can get a secure lid the tank should be fine.

    Re: tank on its side

with something that heavy it might be a bit of a challenge to make the lid secure
also - make sure you support the entire pane of glass on the bottom, since there is a slight rim at the frame
