Went herping again in the mountains this weekend, only this time, since we arrived friday night and left this morning, really only had all day saturday to catch as many herps as humanly possible. Came up with a good bit... 3 red bellies, 6.... yes SIX nothern ringnecks, 32 garter snakes, 2 eastern milksnakes, 2 red efts and 1 ground skink! Here are the highlights photographed for you here!
as always... I do the not-snakes first (save the best for last)


Boyfriend caught me this dragonfly to harass and photograph.... but to my surprise when I set it down to let it free... it sat there and let me photograph it without restraint before leaving!!!

Heres the big ol female ground skink... had a regrown tail!

I released my previously caught milk as he was not feeding... but I got my one last herping wish that I did not fulfill last trip... my very own HATCHLING eastern milksnake! this is a little male... he's in shed! Oh so tiny, and CUTE! I really hope that he starts eating for me!

I also found this larger juvenile... grumpy female! She was CHASING me through the grass... I backed up and she would still come at me!

a GORGEOUS male red belly... firey orange on top and red as snakel-ly possible on the bottom!



Another red belly! This is as greyish brown a snake can get without being... well, gray! HUGE female!

Here are the 1.2 red bellies i found this trip together.... see how varied they are!


Found 6 northern ringnecks... all identical in size!

And lastly, my favorite... the GARTERS! I picked a few of them for photos... nothing spectacular like a flame this time but how can i complain?!
I held onto this girl here.... beautiful solidly orangey snake... thankfully, not gravid.

I never met a snake with redder eyes than this one! stunning! and it had an orange stomach!

and while I am here... I will show you some pictures of some of the babies I have had born recently!
Here's Runt... he's a third of the size of a normal newborn garter.

You have not seen a tiny snake until you hold a newborn red belly. they are 1/4 the size of a baby garter. They can curl up comfortably on a penny. now THAT is tiny! All 4 of them are eating tiny worm peices off off my tongs.

Shannon, amazing pics as usual. I know what you mean about the tiny babies...about the same size as my Dekayis...glad they're feeding for you. Please keep this location as secret as you possibly can, this type of natural diversity needs to be preserved. I'm REALLY jealous of the orange markings you seem to find out east. All of the garters I have found locally are a variation on green/black/brown...very little patterns either, mostly just lateral stripes.
