    Mailbox had her babies!

    mailbox had her babies....unfortunately, all but three were still-born. there were about twenty. but I have three healthy baby Thamnophis sirtalis!

    I didn't have the heart to count them, but my mom and dad did, and they said including the live ones, she had 37 altogether.

    I have seen disproportionately high percentages of still births in very large litters before... I wonder if this is something that happens in the wild too?

    Unfortunately the carnage is consumed quickly by other animals, so it's hard to prove in the wild.

    I have observed my local colonies for too many years now, and never found any rotting stillborns....
