Do Garter's Only Mate After Hibernation?

Do they mate during other times of the year or strictly after thier hibernation?
If they only breed after hibernation, when are their babies born?
    Thanks!

in general they need the cool down period to stimulate the reproductive cycle. they breed when they come out in spring. the babies are born 90-120 days later.

There are some incidents of fall breeding, with the female retaining the sperm for the winter.

The only sure way to prevent breeding, is to keep them apart.

If you wish to breed, a cool down cycle will ensure a better shot that it will happen.

To answer the question in the title, no. Garters don't mate just after hibernation. Like already mentioned, fall breeding can occur and parietalis for example can be stimulated into mating by a sudden, temporary drop in temperature.

More importantly, you can't prevent a captive snake from breeding simply by skipping brumation. It will decrease the chance that they'll mate, but it does by no means eliminate it.

Some species, notably marcianus are known to breed repeatedly throughout the year, whether brumated or not.
