do you have to seperate the males from females?

I have had other snakes that wont breed if the're cage mates (for a decent amount of time) its kind of like they look at each other as siblings (yes just like humans there are a few exceptions haha). does this apply to garters as well?

It definitely helps to separate for awhile and then reintroduce the males. Just my experience.

I don't think it does. A garter's purpose is the create as many other garters as it can in its lifetime. I separate males from females at age 1(sooner if they are larger in size). Breeding is just what they do.
You said "won't breed" better to say "didn't breed"

Agreed! It seams to help when I separate some of mine though. I guess it's like taking candy away from a kid for a month and then throwing a bag of candy on the table lol! It's a little harder to resist then.

Garters will mate with siblings too! They don't mind it's like steve said they do what they were put here to do (reproduce). In my experience though it seems to help to separate for a little while though.

thnx. i had to ask because i have ball pythons, and your not supposed to let them live in a group per say, but sometimes people will house two together and most times they will not breed if housed for a long time. thank you guys! you are all the best!
