I was 6 or 7 when my mom put a garter snake in my hand. It was a T. radix from South Omaha. Garters have been in and out of my life ever since then.

I was a bit older than 30 when my wife got her first garter. We soon picked up a few more. As far as I'm concerned garters and enjoying keeping garters has nothing to do with age or growing up, it's not a case of keeping garters until I grow up and keep another species.
I have no sense of humour, and I don't see the point of the first 4 posts in this thread. You won't get replies immediately, and I'll often skim read the forum and reply to threads that are important and mentally flag others to come back to later.

I caught my first garter when I was around 10 or 11. And I haven't stopped since

I caught my first garter as a kid around 7 or 8 years old and i am now 30 and garters are still my favorite. I strayed away for a little while and did the boa, python, king/corn/rat, and venomous thing, but always turn back to garters. I love venomous too, but i don't plan to keep venomous anymore until maybe my son grows up (had to do the responsible thing at the moment). So for now mostly garters with me. I do want to work with some nerodia morhs.
