    Snake in the house

This is an old story but I never put it on this site

I moved from my home in Franklin Wi and no longer get to see the great big easterans that lived under my from walk. There were always snakes around the perimeter of the house and my late wife was terrified. She understood that they were the reason we never caught or saw a mouse and learned to live with it. One day while walking down the stairs I thought I saw a snake out of the corner of my eye but was not sure. I forgot about it and went about my business. Every morning I would go down to my recording studio in my lower level and start work on the days mixing project. One morning I went downstairs and sat in my chair and right in front of me a big Eastern was coiled on my mixing board. Now I love snakes and am not afraid of them that it startled me because as I was putting my coffee down, the snake gave me an open mouth "leave me alone look" I flipped over backwards in my chair and must have been loud because my wife yelled down what happened? I said, "nothing honey". If she knew there was a snake in the house we would be moving, lol. I recovered and watched the snake for a while as she coiled on the warm powered board. She was the most defensive Garter I have ever seen. Constantly striking at me as I picked it up and chewing on my hand. That was the day I learned if I held a snake with an open hand or stick they were cool, but if I grabbed them they did not like it.

I miss living in that home because while I moved to a great 1939 home in a beautiful green space with mature trees I have yet to see a snake the first summer.
I hope I have better luck this spring and summer. There is a little creek behind my house and I did see a Mink. I guess a mink farm in Racine county was hit by a tornado a few years ago. Oh and a dead guy last week, RIP
Do garters hunt, swim or drink in calm creeks?

Yes to all. Calm creeks can have minnow, leeches and many other tasty treats a garter would love.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.
