Nebraska T.s.p (Red Sided Garter Snake) Den

Today, I was able to visit the den at Alicia's home.
I think I was a week late getting there as there were only a few males left in the area. Since Alicia saw a breeding ball last week I'm guessing most have the snakes have dispersed for the season.
The den is simply a few rodent burrows in the grass.
The first male encountered had a very bad attitude and repeatedly bit me. He was nice enough to not blast me with musk though.
The other males we found were up by the house. They have claimed the area under the concrete steps as their living quarters.
This area appears to be a perfect environment for garter snakes as water and food are readily available. I saw many young leopard frog in the water and heard what sounded like thousands of Northern Cricket Frogs close by.
I also saw a good population of minnows in the deeper water areas. It appears this is a wetland area and should provide an ample supply of food.

Even though there were few snakes out it was great to be out herping with my son Kale.

Thanks for sharing, Steve....nice post. That is exactly where Cee Cee was living shortly before moving to my flowerbed...under the concrete steps at the back of my house. I think there were a lot of snakes under there at one time. They are beautiful snakes Alicia has there on her land.
