    A couple questions

    Garter .jpg Garter surprize.jpg
These are my outside pets. They have been there for three years. My question is are they both females because of the size, they are both really fat
    .

My other question is how spread out are the den sites. I have looked everywhere in my general area for limestonr rocky outcroppings and have found many suitable site, but never any with snakes. Is it common to find on of those places where all the snakes come out like I have seen on nature tv

Looks like Thamnophis sirtalis (Eastern Garter Snake-Common Garter Snake).

Both could be gravid. Nice looking snakes.
As far as den sites go they could be anywhere. Snakes use whatever is available for a den.
I think finding them is hard.

I agree...they look like easterns. Very big lovely easterns! And they do look like they are probably gravid...definitely look like gravid females...I haven't seen any male easterns that big. Dens can be holes right in the ground...look for holes that the snakes may be coming out of in the ground...around here the easterns usually make dens right in the ground or they make homes under my house or under my back stairs or a wooden platform that I had outside from gardening. Thanks for sharing the pics...take good care of those beautiful girls!

They get bigger here than anywhere else. I have seen garters all over Wisconsin but the like the toads and frogs in my back yard

    Awesome. Unless you're a toad.
