I was probably 6 or 7. I'm now almost 50 and still love these snakes!

Grabbed my first garter when I was 6. Promptly let it go because it bit me. Had several in HS, then LEFT them behind because Rosy Boas, Mountain Kings, Variable Kings, Sinaloans, Nelson's, Mexican Milks, Corns, Desert Kings, Ball Pythons, Pituophis of all kinds, Calabar Pythons, and Hogg Island Boas were more interesting. Now at age 64 I have come full circle BACK to that first snake that bit me. I find Garters quite interesting now.

That first bite was when you were infected. It's a good thing.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.

So that's what the "itch" was all these years. That 'splains it quite well.

And here we thought they were mostly non-venomous. That explains so much lol

I like my BP, but she's basically just a large snake-shaped rock that wakes up to eat every five days. The garters are always out following me around (in their tanks). I want to get into working with monitors and larger constrictors when I have space and money, but I really don't see a time when I wouldn't want to be also keeping garters.

Lora -- yup, Garters get out and about. I used to put my Ball Pythons on the cement apron in front of my garage (it's usually warm here in the El Paso region) while I cleaned their tubs. Sometimes they'd move ten feet or so before I was finished. Most just basked in the sun. Don't think I'll try that with a Garter, however. But Ball Pythons are cool, too, in a chunky sort of way. My Hogg Island Boa was beautiful as well, but I got tired of raising rats in the garage (and mice). These Garters will be much easier to deal with in that regard. The local mouse man will have plenty for me to freeze.

I miss my Hogg Island boas! I love how at night they would change colors and be almost white!

Me? I liked how my colleagues from work would be at one of the BBQs at our hose, ask to see the snakes in the garage and then THEY would promptly turn white when I pulled the Hogg Island female out for "show and tell." Same species of snake; different species turning white. And I'm still playing with snakes.
