racks with plastic enclosures?

Mine have top opening, and they're all perfectly fine with it. No one really flinches when I open, unless I'm being stupid while trying to open the tank.

One idea is making a rack out of big gallon tubs. I use these 30 gallon tubs sometimes, and they are pretty good in size. Not sure it can help you with space as much, but it could possibly work if you are willing to get a stepladder.

Also, they are not that hard to see through.

how many holes do you put in that size? what company makes then? I went looking today and the largest I found was a 26 gallon that was clear.
