It could mean death to both snakes. It's not worth the risk.

He should be fine with other wanderings around his size

I don't think the size matters. They can still swallow one another, or even a slightly larger snake, believe it or not.

Twice. Was keeping two vagrans and a tetrataenia in the same enclosure a couple of years ago. Everything had gone well for almost a year and then suddenly the smallest vagrans tried to kill the tetra, which was noticably bigger. No food involved. Wrote it off as the snake being pregnant and just extra hungry and the vagrans ID:ing the tetra as a "legitimate target" because it was a different (read: prey) species.
4 months later one baby vagrans tried to kill its cagemate. No food involved.
I know at least one other European member, who's lost vagrans to vagrans without warning and after long-term cohabitation.

wow! I fortunately haven't had any issues like that..... yet anyway
