    Snake Yawned!

Today was feeding day and as my ribbon snake gets really hyper after eating, I hung out and watched him explore for a while. He was coming out from under his hollowed log, and was staring at me as he often does, when suddenly he opened his mouth as wide as he could! His mouth looked four times the size it is when it's shut, and I could see his fangs and several other little teeth. He kept it open for a second or two, and it looked like his upper jaw was spread out like his lower one. Have any of your snakes ever done this? Should I be worried?

It's kind of cute when they do that. Mine barely open theirs when they do that. Some snakes look downright silly when they do it. I love seeing pictures of them

I've seen mine do it once or twice not following a meal, but they almost always do it following a meal, or even during it.

Looks like a yawn but if they do it right after they eat it's usually to just realign their jaws. Bringing up the topic....I wonder if snakes do yawn?

^^^Yup, they do. I've seen every one of my critters yawn at some point. You should see the geckos do it! Their entire little faces open!

Stefan-A, that second yawn was exactly what Percy did, except he's so tiny I guess I didn't see his jaws moving around. I've seen him do the little smacking thing after eating a fish, too. It's the cutest thing!

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.
