I have a few advantages. One, front opening enclosures. I never come down on my snakes. They can always see me coming and when I do get into their enclosures I am at eye level.
I also spend a lot of time with them. Sometimes it's just open and say hello then close. This way they get used to me opening and closing. Sometimes I just rest my head on their door and let them come and check me out. They crawl up to my face, smell my hair and skin. If it's a real skittish snake I won't talk. Otherwise I carry on a conversation towards them. They get used to my mouth moving and can feel the vibrations of my voice.
I understand the taming has to be done at their speed and under their rules. You can't force the issue. I've had snakes take months to get over certain things.
This requires patients. Being a father of 5 kids, I have plenty of that.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.
