Re: Help!!! I have (she has) two eggs!!!

Good! Now, back to my question...do you think mama ate the other two snakes she was shipped with? I can't find them and I really don't see how they could have escaped from such a tiny crevice in my cage. Do garters eat other garters?

I do know some species of Thamnophis will eat others of their kind. Wandering garters are somewhat notorious for it. But if these are Xenochrophis, I don't really know. It's possible, though.

But if there's a crack in your cage, I'm willing to bet they squeezed out. Believe it or not, snakes can flatten themselves and slip through openings that are much smaller than you'd think would allow them through.

I would also hazard a guess that they are outside.

    Unhappy Bad News....

Boy, this has all happened too fast! It's taken a bad turn; mama snake left her nest for a short time so I checked on the eggs to see how they were doing, and they were gone! I suspect mama was still stressed from moving cross country in a small container w/two strangers (my other two keelbacks) and THEN to be housed with them in a strange environment with eggs to be laid 3 days later! I am disappointed and heartbroken, but not as bad as if the babies had hatched and then something drastic happened to them after me getting attached to them. Why, I am NOW just getting to know Mom on a first-hand basis!
Well, like I said, it was in God's hands. Just wasn't meant to be at this time. I will try later when she gets accustomed to her surroundings and is comfortable!
Thanks for all of your warm support! I need some time to myself right now...

Oh. Because you know, it seems to me that, aside
from being a little mentally ill, she's pretty normal.

    I'm Hurting Inside....

You guys have brought me to tears. I NEVER in my life would have thought that I would get attached to a snake (or snakes). For 50-plus years I had been afraid of them; well, not really afraid, but leery.... I finally have discovered what all you herp owners are so proud of; making friends (and pets) of some of the most unlikely creatures on earth, at least in man's eyes. I am now a devoted snake lover and am looking forward to caring for many, many more in the future!!! To think of the naivity that humans have for these lovely creatures.....it's a crying shame.... I'm hooked for Life!

Re: Help!!! I have (she has) two eggs!!!

You think that's bad? I was a full-blown ophidiophobe about 4 months ago. Started coming here, trying to find information about the reptiles infesting the shrubs around my house, and now look at me: not only have I caught and relocated some 18 garters, but I've actually kept two of them! AND IT'S THAMNOPHIS.COM'S FAULT!!

    CURSE YOU THAMNOOOOOPHIIIISSSSS!!!
    *vigorously shakes fist*

Sorry the eggs didn't work out, and I hope you find the missing ones soon.
