    Small Town Nebraska Herping

Today was a very interesting day. My good friend Mark, my daughter Gabby and I had hoped to locate a couple high-red radixes but were skunked (figuratively speaking) We did travel to a couple of very small towns on some reports of red radixes. We met a few very nice people who let us on their property. One lady we met told us she had a lot of baby snakes in her yard and wanted them gone. She was going to cut the grass that night and said that many of them get killed. She said that was a good thing and she didn't care how they were gone as long as they were gone. While driving to her house I thought she probably had 1 maybe 2 snakes in her yard and that would be it.
Once there I found out she was telling the truth. In a small grassy backyard we found 17 babies and 1 gravid brown phase radix. The lady arrived a short time later and was thrilled the snakes were leaving. I marked that town on my GPS. I'll get a few photos posted tomorrow. It was a beautiful sunny day in the low 70's.

    Steve,

How's that "Unwed Radix" home going? sounds like you need an addition and a few helping hands. I can relocate some for you. East Coast is nice this time of year. We've got leaf peeping season comin' up soon!

I got a call from a guy who says he saw a red garter snake out by his mailbox. He says he lives 50 mile north of Omaha. I wonder how he got my number. Only 50 miles, sounds like a road trip coming up this weekend.

The seventeen babies I recovered from a yard are all growing and doing well. I've notice a diamond amongst the regular radixes. This little red one. As she's growing she getting more and more red.
