Dean, I am far from being good at identifing the many different Thamnophis species, so I'll leave that to others. It is a great looking snake and good photo.

    Hey Dean,

that seems to be a dark colored plains garter snake or Thamnophis radix.

    Nice looking animal.

    Best wishes,

    hey,

most definitely a Plains Gartersnake, classic orange stripe down the center, their not the largest of the Thamnophis, averaging about 24" to 30",they do very well in captivity.nightcrawlers and minnows/goldfish,thawed out minnows in the winter ,will even take strips of fish from your fingers,They do very well in cooler climates, afew years back, over Thanksgiving weekend,we had some very mild weather(for November),and they where out, catching some rays.we've got hundreds on these in our backyard, and by mid-August,we won't be able to cut the grass, the ground will be crawling of young'ins.check out "My Photos" for a rare variation,,we caught memorial weekend.

it does look like a plains...can't see the side stripes well enough to tell, but plains have the side stripe on scale rows 3 and 4....
