    what kind of snake?

    It isn't a garter snake but I can't figure out what it is. Any ideas? I live in Illinois.

    Well, it's definitely a Nerodia, but which species, I'm not sure. N. sipedon, would be my guess.

    I'm tending to agree as well. Some of the pics I found of N. e. flavigaster were actually mislabelled northerns.
