but very effective...im in complete control over the temperture and humidity. I use a layer of Cyress mulch and leaves. I can raise the humidity without worrying about mold, the leaves can be used for the snakes to hide in, easily replaced when soiled and probably helps balance the ph of the substraite....and then theres the critter that lives in there...happy guy

I'm considering changeing from paper towel, because of the difficulty of spot cleaning with paper towel. (Not to mention that the various muches look much nicer than Bounty.)

I was just looking at cypress mulch at the pet store the other day...but I didn't know if it was safe to use. What did you make the holes with? Another question...the mulch that people put in their gardens...does anyone know if that is safe for snakes? If not...does anyone know if you can buy cypress mulch for your garden?

I make the holes with soldering iron...cypress mulch from the garden depot. is the kind i use, normal much is a mixture of woods,cyress can be mixed too but i get the cypress only batch

Cool...thanks. I'm getting ready to put mulch down in my yard...and I was thinking I would get something that was safe for snakes...so that I could attract my easterns to my garden. I don't want to put anything down that wouldn't be safe for the snakes to burrow in. *Snake conscious gardening .

i've been buying big bags of shredded hardwood mulch at lowes. it's 2 cubic ft (56 litres) for $4 a bag. haven't had any issues at all with it and the snakes love to burrow in it.
