    Howdy All

I'm new here and I'm in search of some info actually. I have found snake skins in my yard over the last several years and now I am finding snakes. Garter snakes I believe.

I live in Wilmington Delaware (USA) and I am just a mile or so from the Pennsylvania border. I found a really long one last Thursday. My son took it to a nature center near him for identification and they called it a Butler's garter.

I had written to Director at the Indiana-Perdue University and he said he doubts it was a Butler's. The snake was nearly 2 feet long with a distively triangular (diamond?) shaped head. It had the coloring found on the Butler's. Yellow stripes down the sides and an yellowish white belly.

I wrote to the Director because I had recently travelled to Ohio in my camper. I was wondering about a hitch hiker. I read the Butler's can be found in Ohio. Sorry I don't have pictures but if any one can shed some light on what I found I'd be most appreciative.

    Welcome aboard.

Without pictures, it's near impossible to say for sure. Garters tend to flatten their heads when feeling threatened, making them appear triangular when viewed from above.

Hi Ed, and welcome to the forum.
Without pics or a much more detailed description any attempt at ID would simply be a guess.

Oddly enough, after posting my inquiry, I was told to look at the Eastern garter snake. When I 'googled' it/him, I found a website That showed the garter I had found.

It's so neat now many color variations there can be in a species. I might just get hooked on these little guys yet.

Yes they are very addicting very fast.. Only a few days after catching my first checkered (on the 4th) I am wanting to get a second (male) but I am getting flack form the significant other about that idea :P

While she loves the lil checkered we found measuring a dainty 17.5 in. She hardly enjoys the idea of breading or catching more. YET!!!!!!
