    Wild caught water snakes

There is a reptile store selling water snakes on fauna classifieds for $5.00.
I can't believe somebody is going out and raping the wild just to make $5.00ea on these nice water snakes. Yes i've kept some snakes from the wild and yes i've sold some from the wild, but to go out and rape the wild just to make a quick five bucks unbelievable.

Green snakes are going for the same price. I contacted a guy to see if they were wild caught.
He said they were wild caught and he was expecting a shipment of a 100 in the next couple of days.
Tough for the snakes to keep up with those numbers.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.

I know what you mean. I just hope they end up in good hands. The snakes that i sold from the wild certain friends asked me for and i knew they were in good hands.

This is going on every day in Florida. The wild populations hardly stand a chance. You got who knows how many of these people out there collecting. They don't just take a few either. They take every single snake they come across. Tons of them die too, the remainder hit the market in sad shape. They don't bother to deworm, quarantine, or even feed them. They just round 'em up, overcrowd them, and sell them.

Yeah I looked into green snakes before garters and most all are wild caught, even one of the big Florida reptile distributors said they don't know of any captive breds available. Green snakes are also disappearing rapidly in some areas.

Plus I heard they are rather difficult to keep so sadly a lot of those $5 wild caughts probably won't survive very long.

The only way to stop this insanity is if everyone, and that means everyone, stops buying them.

Rough greens are threatened and protected in most states. They are just impossible to keep in captivity anyway. Smooth greens are not protected in most cases, are far more common, and can be kept successfully.
