It just means that someone likes what you said on the post that they liked. You can like a post by clicking on the little like link at the bottom of the post.

Likes are a quick way to acknowledge a post without actually typing a reply.

Likes -- an overused form of acknowledgment.
That's my take.
It's the same as on Facebook, I think it also ads up on the threads like too... Up at the top there's a big number of how many likes, so the thread can get lots of likes by people liking the individual posts.....
I don't know.
