    Re: Pinky Mice Sale

I bought some frozen pinkies and during the time that my ribbon snake was eating alot I was able to sneak one to him but now he isnt eating anything at all barely(once again). He looks good and all (Kinda thick) but not eating anything aside from the two pieces after nearly a four to five day stretch of no food. I got back from a short 4 day trip and he ate a couple pieces of fish and thats all. I know that its not shedding time (just recently shed a week and a half or so ago). Some of the fish I've been getting hasnt been the freshest, sometimes I think the stores are selling fairly old fish. Today I picked up some and its definetly fresh but still wouldnt eat.
Is it common at all to get pinkies that are alive and feed with? Seems like the movement would attract.

Some local pet stores will have live pinkies.
I don't recommend doing it at all. Just try nightcrawlers, they are a favorite. You can also try scenting the frozen pinkies with nightcrawlers.
I personally don't think its right to feed snakes live mice.

Why do you differentiate live mice versus live nightcrawlers? What about other live prey like fish or tadpoles?

Is ther a certain type of minnow thats good to feed with? Before I found out about thiamenise my snake seemed to love to catch the minnows it seemed. Why not live pinkys is it too dangerous to digest? After thinking about it I dont think wanna feed with them (live pinkys) anyway. just curius

I believe there is a species of minnow that is safe(don't remember the species), the real problem is finding them commercially. They might be safe(no thiaminase) but could have a parasite load because of the conditions there are kept in. Then again, wild caught may also introduce parasites, pathogens and toxins. Most garters love to go fishing. They don't care about thiaminase, they just want to eat.
Live pinkies seems inhumane(no offense meant), with the availability of frozen I don't see any advantage to feeding live prey. Certainly not pinkies but live mice and rats injure many a snake before they die.
