I learned that the hard way after 10 hard drive changes due to Best Buys constant ignorance. Never going to Best Buy again. Not only did they charge me over 400 dollars for a "simple hard drive crashing, computer frying virus" (their exact words), it wasn't even a virus to begin with. It was the disks they gave me for back up.

I got an external at 75 dollars for 500gb of space. I'm starting to need a 2 tb one, though with all of the stuff I do and games that I play. I can't find one that;s cheap enough, though
