    i always imagined them to look more like flying grasshoppers
    I'm not sure why
    the cicada we use in chinese medicine looks nothing like a grasshopper
    but it looks a bit more like beetle than this one

    We have one species, Cicadetta montana, but it's only found in an area about 1ha in size. And I've been there once (school trip this spring), but didn't see any of them.     Rhea, I think they're more closely related to beetles than to true grasshoppers, but I could be wrong.

    No, I was wrong. They are more closely related to aphids and shield bugs than to grasshoppers or beetles.

    That is the summer, or annual cicada... a bit different from the 17 year cicada.

    And yes, that is the natural color underneath... they are kind of coated with a dusty white.
