Re: Best deal on Aspen ever..

I think it was the feed store component that you need. There are no such items at any tractor supply around here. I know because the tractor supply is one of my stops for the fourth of July. Anyone know what happens when you take a fuse to a plastic juice container with a squirt of ether (tractor starter fluid) and a squirt of pure oxygen inside? Yeah, me neither.

Re: Best deal on Aspen ever..

I did find this stuff at my walmart for the same price. I like it because it is shredded aspen... it's the best for the snakes that like burrowing like my hognose and i also like it for my little garters. The big bale of shavings I normally use is regular sized shavings. I still am using newspaper pellet, but with a baby on the way, i don't know if I will continue to buy it because it costs a LOT more than aspen. By a LOT, I mean I can afford it, but why when the only reason I stopped using aspen was because sometimes the shavings flying everywhere gets annoying. So I may have to vacuum more often... but a $10 bale of aspen will do half my snakeroom, whereas a 25lb bag of newspaper pellet will only do 3 or 4 of the tubs in my iris cb-110 rack system (huge tubs) and they are about $10 a bag. Working at a pet supply place does have it's advantages, I can stake out for a really good sale on newspaper pellet and stock up. Not too long ago purina yesterday's news was putting out buy1get1 free coupons on some of their packages. I peeled them off the packages and saved them (customers dont appreciate them anyways! half the time they dont even see it) so I have 9 coupons and am waiting for a really good sale on the big bags to stock up! Regular price is like $16 a bag, so I wont ever buy it at that price, but if it goes on sale for like... $12.98, and I use coupons, it's a good buy. After that though, it's probably going to be back to aspen!

and isn't this a bit off topic?
or does your special recipe involve aspen other than for the clean-up after?

Yeah, the walmart stuff is fairly fine shredded too and so the bags are highly compressed so you get a lot in small bag. And it's not really long shreds like I've seen before. IDK, I haven't really noticed any problems with this stuff "flying everywhere". Not a lot of light particulates (a.k.a. "dust") either, even though it's finely shredded.

One drawback is if you're using wide, shallow water dishes for neonates. One tiny particle gets on the edge of the dish and well, it sucks all the water out of the dish like a straw. Not all that big of a problem I suppose, if I improvise. I'll just have to adapt a method to keep that from happening. I could just devise a method to wall off the water dish area from the substrate or something like that. It's also a food magnet. Absolutely must feed them a million miles away from the nearest particle or it will figuratively fly across the room and land on their food. I have to put the snakes in a separate feeding enclosure and let them settle down for a while before I feed them.

Where there's a will, there's a way. For the price and the fact that the snakes just love the stuff, I'll figure out how to use it well and minimize the negative aspects. I've never been a huge fan of aspen but this stuff from walmart has a nice size/texture and it certainly is absorbent and reduces odor very well.

I guess I'm still in trial phase with it and I'll be watching for ways in which it works, or doesn't work, and try to post the negative/positive things about it.
