Re: Other pets (pics and discussions)

Amongst the confusion about the african bullfrog posted earlier, I stumbled upon what may cause a little more. But the photo of two frogs that was posted that were claimed to be what are called bullfrogs are not bullfrogs, they are the Green Frog (Lithobates clamitans), or whatever your locality decides to call them. The subspecies in my area is the Northern Bronze Frog (Lithobates clamitans melanotas), and after breeding a few pairs last year, I couldnt help but notice that the picture was not depicting bullfrogs. North American Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) lack the prominent ridge-lines along the back. The only difference I have found between these frogs is in reproduction and size. The green frog matures much faster, and a single female may lay up to 30,000 eggs, whilst they only reach a length of up to maybe 8 inches with their legs stretched.

I wish I could find what you're talking about but even if I showed you green frogs instead of bullfrogs the confusion was already sorted out. I mistook "African Bullfrog" for "American Bullfrog". Anyway there aren't any clamitans where I am, just American Bullfrogs. No ridges on them and no similar species in my area. It's just another google images nightmare. If you google "American Bullfrog" it brings up images of an African bullfrog above the description as well as a few images of the correct animal

    Ah yes, google nightmares. :P
Yes, in BC we have the clamitans melanotas as the main competitor with the bullfrogs, well on the Island atleast. They were introduced from Eastern Canada as the Green Frog (originally Rana clamitans, now Lithobates c.), but recently the subspecies (Northern Bronze Frog) was named for/within its area of distribution. I don't imagine there is any difference between the two, or much of one anyhow. It seems to me that its just like the Hyla/Pseudacris change. Hyla regilla went to Pseudacris regilla, and then divided into Pseudacris regilla and Pseudacris maculata based on lacation. I think Pacific Tree Frog, Pacific Chorus Frog, Pacific Green Treefrog, and Boreal Chorus Frog are all accepted common names, but really, why so many necessary?
