    New Reptile

A friend of mine who I work with caught a very young horned lizard. To be species specific....which I like to be....(she) is a Short Horned Lizard. They are all over his parents property near Alamosa, CO. He is not able to keep her, so I got a new friend.

Here is a picture of the little lizard. She is so tiny, but eating well. My friend gave the horny toad some ants before I picked it up. Gotta collect some more tomorrow after work.

Not named yet, but open to suggestions

I LOVE these, but the care is way to intense for me. You need to keep them hot, like 110 degrees hot and I just can't afford that kind of electric bill. I saw these at the Myrtle Beach ReptiCon this month. A MUST (or they will die) is the Repashy Formic-Cal Plus Ant Eater Supplement Repashy Formic-Cal Plus Ant Eater Supplement 5.3oz This way you can also feed them roaches, crickets and other insects.

I have never heard of that product before. I have to collect some harvester ants for her after work today. Horny toads need the folic acid in the ants or they don't survive. I will have to do some research to see if that suppliment is safe for horned lizards. I find that a lot of sites really don't know as much about reptiles as they would like to think they do.

The place I got my tadpoles from didn't know anything about garters. They suggested goldfish and were confused when I told them goldfish weren't safe for garters.

Congrats on the new addition to your reptile collection. I have read that those lizards are incredibly hard to successfully keep in captivity so good luck and keep us updated on his/her progress. Also if you have trouble finding or catching harvester ants, you can buy them online.

Cute little lizard... Have also heard that they are insanely hard to keep alive... Majority of people who try to keep them end up killing them. Unintentionally

... Try to create a living vivirium, ant colony and plants etc... that would be my best bet... Heat mat and 150w bulb ... lots of heat.

    Good luck.

    Re: New Reptile

It's a new product designed just for the horned lizard. I talked to a guy at Myrtle Beach about this. Since this product has been tested and does what it's suppose to do he started raising the horned lizards since this would make it possible for them to survive in captivity where ants might be hard to come by.
