yep, looks about the right size for a baby garter, they really are the cutest. a low wattage heatlamp should be ok, as long as it doesnt get too hot and dehydrate the little one.Good luck with him/her, its gonna fun chopping up the food.

waiting for my girl to have some babies too as shes defininately gravid. As for Cee Cee, keep an eye on her and dont disturb her too much, she may have more, she might not. Congrats on the first one anyway

    Re: Marnie's Snakes

Yep...I just got back home and still just the one...she, I'm going with she at this point, although Julian has already named her Zeus and decided it is a boy...is doing okay it seems. I'm just so afraid I will hurt her...I've already dropped her twice...she's fast and she slithered out of my hand. Julian seems to be more excited about snakes now...he is the one who found her...and he has been on watch all day for more babies. I think if the little one makes it, this just might be Julian's first snake. Cee Cee is still very restless...so, maybe she will have some more. I have little Zeus in a 20 gallon tank...because it is very secure with a slide lock lid...there is a 40 watt regular bulb in a dome lamp..is that too much? I have a little lid of water...a little carefresh because she likes to burrow. How do I keep her well hydrated? And is that correct that I wait until her first shed to feed her? Thanks for all the help you guys!

40 watt is great, and the rest sounds good too. As for feeding, it never hurts to try, some feed right away, others take longer. Probably best to start with fish and/or worms and reeally tiny pieces at that.

Is there something I should be doing to ensure that she stays hydrated? Should I put moist paper towels or a moist moss hide in the tank? I have a little plastic lid with water in it...but I haven't seen her try to drink any water yet. Thanks for all the advice. I was going to try feeding little tiny fish pieces to start. I will try offering her some later tonight.

something really shallow that she can get out of if needed and the occasional misting. maybe a damp paper towel. as long as there's a water source in the enclosure, they'll find it.

For the first week of life I give all my babies forced pool time everyday.
To keep them hydrated, to give them some exercise and help remove any leftover first shed.
It also gives me a chance to see all the snakes to see if there are any problems.
