It would be interesting to hear from Robert (DEKAN) about the time of day his Mexican Black Bellied Garter is active.

I reckon Checkereds are active in the late evening because they come from a warmer area (Texas etc). Any thoughts?
Do you know exactly where in Texas? They are supposed to live here, but I've lived here 8 years and I've never seen one.

Elliot, I think they are not found in extreme Eastern Texas and not on the coast, but widespread elsewhere.

That'd explain it, come to think of it, I've never seen a garter in real life!

I guess you need to head inland, Elliot. My guess is (and it is just a guess) that Checkereds are most common along the Mexican border.

It's possible, the western area of the state is desert along the border, but south of us it may be different.

I wish I lived in the southern States. Your reptile fauna is just unbelievable!

There are a lot of different kinds of reptiles here, but some aren't very come or they at least aren't very easy to find. Even the ribbon snakes here are rare, you see a lot more copperheads around here.

Don't forget, Copperheads are one of my favourites, them and Eastern Diamondbacks. (Not sure if you have those, probably not).

There are a few Sistrurus miliarius streckeri and some Crotalus atrox in the sand dunes on Galveston Island.
