Great picture, Wayne! It's lucky when you can catch them in a pose like that at the right time.

I stopped keeping it as warm as I used to... since 1) we have gas heating and its costly and 2) I can tell my snakes prefer to bask under a light.

With the rack system constantly running, the room stays at about 77 degrees. With the garters that I recently switched to basking... I put in very low wattage coil bulbs (only enough heat comes out to make one ond of the tank a bit warmer) so that theres not a huge amount of heating coming out, but theres LIGHT and they gravitate to it like you wouldn't believe. I did an "experiment with my butleri babies. They stopped eating for some reason, all 5 of them. I put them on a thermostat regulated heating pad for two weeks and I got mixed results with eating. I took away the heat and instead provided a light that provided the same temps during the daytime. All 5 of them now are eating consistently and are not nearly as suspicious of food items put in front of them. I got such a good result, I decided to try it with my baby wanderings and I got the SAME result. Therefore, I will slowly be converting as many tanks as I can to accomodate a light source whether it gives off heat or not.

well if you think about it they need the heat to help them digest and in the wild to get that heat they would sit in a sunny spot to absorb the heat so i think it is only natural that they we eat better with a light source present because they think they have a nice warm bright area to sit in.
