How many Hobbits do you think could ride on that thing?
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff.

@Rod, Yes...it was...but the overall pattern of coloring on the feathers was more marbled looking. There was more brown and white throughout the feathers. It looked exactly like that bird though. The head and beak were exactly that shape and I would say that it was about 12-14 inches tall. I was in awe when I saw it. Part of the reason I didn't get a picture was because I was sitting at my window with my mouth hanging open for a good five minutes before I ran to get my camera. Then I had to try to sneak up and get a pic without scaring it off...which didn't work of course. I saw two more just like it around my neighborhood and then one more at the baseball field. Prior to this year, I have never seen birds like this in this area before. There have also been a bunch of huge black crows that have made a nest high in a tree over my house this year. Interestingly, I have not seen the big birds or the crows since March. I have found some skulls in my yard though that I think may be crow skulls.

I you are sure that your bird looks like the one in the Pic. Then it will be a Redtail but they are quite big. So it could be one of the smaller Buteos. I can't be sure unless I see a pic.

Yep...from my window it looked like it was at least a foot tall...maybe a foot and a half. It was big. If I see any around again, I will try to get a pic...but, like I said...I haven't seen any in a while now. It came around and kept perching outside my front door for a few days...this was maybe in January or February? Then I didn't see it again. I saw a couple down near my neighbors house around the same time and one at the baseball field in March. I haven't seen any since.
