Re: I must really love my garters!

Wayne.. i know how you feel! I am always dragging one of my brothers out to the creek to net minnows. It is MUCH more effective if you use two people: and here's why. Minnows when scared will flee either down or upstream depending on which way you are coming from. I am sure you realize how annoying that is. They generally always use the path that is the deepest and fastest moving part of the water. If there are two equally low and fast paths, block one off with some stones. I get my brother to walk on land so that he is standing upstream of the large group of minnows. Then, he gets into the center of the water and waits for me. I and standing downstream(this keeps the net wide open the whole time) from that same group of minnows and put the net down (it works best if the net is dark in color) into the deepest fastest part of the flow and hold it there. Then my brother starts stomping and RUNNING straight for the minnows who panic and flee downstream and in their panic, almost the whole school will swim straight into the net and when you pull up, you have a net full of 100 minnows!

I also found that if you find a good deep hole in a creek, and you simply put teh net down in the water and wait 5 or 10 minutes... fish of all sorts start to get curious (provided you hold completely still) and will start to swim right in and out of the net!

I have noticed that, epecially with my king rat snake the effect is amazing. I can always tell when he's thinking food, because normally his pupil while open are large and round, but as soon as he spots a "meal" of any sort, his eyes instantly narrow into tiny red vertical slits and he looks EVIL!!!!

Shannon, when Dorothy is not helping, I hold the net and throw rocks upstream to spook the minnows my way

Re: I must really love my garters!

The snow male is a fussy eater, when I first got him he had not had a meal since birth, required baby toads to get him started.

I always have to offer fish first, and shove pinky parts at him as he is swallowing his fish.

I told the breeder recently that most people would have ran out of patience with him by now.

    Thanks for the compliment.
