i got my digital camera about as year ago, cheap-o one from radio shack for $95 i think it was, 6.0mp samsung s630. it hasd gone thru hell and still works fine for what it is. one day id liek to get a real nice camera but i cant see spending that much cash on a camera for me to bust it up when im out on my 4x4 adventures

I used to have an HP digital camera, don't remember the specs, but it was good. I never got to learn how to use it. after 5 yrs, we had to replace it. We got a Kodak EasyShare Z700 4.0 mp 5X zoom.

Then for my Bday(sept), I bought myself a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70 8.1 mp, only con is 3X zoom. But it's ok, most of the subjects I shoot are right there in front of me!!! LOL DSC-T70 | Silver Cyber-shot® T70 Digital Still Camera | Sony | SonyStyle USA
(best camera for me, I love it), has macro feature, never knew what that was, till 2 weeks ago..

I bought it through Crutchfield.com got $20 off, then an extra $20 off!! So I saved $40.

I use 2: Kodak EOS digital rebel and Sony Cybershot 8.1 Nice zoom and great macro. Both bought at Sam's Club well under their value. Sony was $40.00 after it had been returned. It is beatup but takes great pictures. The EOS was a last years, last one, and the manager let me have it for 325.00. Got lucky on cameras. Can we post video on this forum? Have a Sony Hi-Def camcorder and would like to post some feeding video.

After years of point and shoot digital (Mostly Canon SureShot or Nikon CoolPix) I longed for the versatility I used to have with my old Olympus OM-1 Even though the Coolpix 5400 was very versatile, it was still limited so I splurged on a Nikon D80. I love it! SLR versatility and Quality combined with digital point-shoot-delete (repeat) is awesome.

I use a Canon A95 5 megapixel. Does good for what I paid for it, and for the fact that its an older model now.

If I get a SLR, I will also need a suitable lens.

Depends on what you want to shoot!
For garters? 60 mm from the camera brand or maybe 90/105 mm from a third party (sigma/tamron)

I'll be saving for the nikor 60mm next year. Possibly the sharpest lense they have produced so far and affordable!

Hmmm, with wild reptiles a longer focal lenght might be better. I guess you'll be buying from a store? Or from the internet?
If its a store, try to see what fits your needs. Most stores don't mind you testing out the lense in the shop

Sigma 105 might be a good choice. I think canon has a 100mm as well. But that costs a pretty penny
