Males and females can be hostile. Every snake has it's own way of viewing you. Respect the snake and you will likely be respected.

Not rare. Extremely common and available pretty much globally. Not expensive. Baby Albino checkereds usually go for around $30. Checkered garters spread across the globe decades ago and are available in many markets even where other garter species are not available, and albino checkereds are one of the first garter snake morphs available when the market for CB garters was still very young.

I've seen them being offered for up to 130... obviously I'll take free ones if I can get them. I'm more interested in gender and temperament than in species or color.

Cool Re: So I want to buy a snake...

I know what you mean about no one in the area (MA/RI) raising or selling garters. They don't seem to ever have them at the few Reptile Shows we have around here either. It all comes down to ignorance about how great garter snakes are and how many beautiful varieties that are available. Oh well their loss our gain I guess. I'm surprised you can't find wild garters I have several in my backyard although the last one I saw I picked him up and he wasn't to happy about! He musked me and when I put him down he was gone! Haven't seen him since!

There used to be a lot more... I suspect its a combination of factors... more birds, less water, larger more obvious me to scare the snakes away.

You're very lucky to be getting a free snake! No ones offered me one probably because they're afraid it won't eat, lol. I'm from MA also, have been living in RI for 10 years. You know what the call us here right?
