I've usually only seen them called by their scientific name, but apparently they can be referred to as simply "water snakes".

That's funny because I've also heard them called Brazilian ground snake. One thing's apparently for certain: You can usually find them on the the ground or in water.

I suppose that narrows it down somewhat. It sounds like they were trying to make a clear distinction that this snake is not likely to be encountered in the only two places left; up in trees or deep in caves.

I'm not sure of any good common name but the scientific works for me and tends to be much more accurate. I love these things and hope to get more liophis in the future!
