Oh my, I do as well! It could be so simple, or it could be something a little more.

    Re: Hey, Stupid!

I think there is more to garters than just; eat, sleep, breed, and poop.
Mine recognize me by scent, because (now) every time I feed them they don't attack the worm until I drop it. However, (while I am still in posession of the worm) if/when I move the worm around the enclosure they usually follow, but do not strike. (until I drop it)
This is probably because they recognize my scent, and realize I am not a food source.
This theory would prove garters have some sort of memory, thus proving that there is more to these interesting creatures than the basics.
But, as I previously implied, "This is only a theory."

My male concinnus' did that, and so did a few CB subadults. Very pushy they were when it suited them. Standoffish and downright awnry the rest of the time. Sometimes I could almost hear them laugh at me. "Watch me manipulate this human, they said..." My females were much too ladylike for that nonsense. The ladies begged politely with that puppy-dog look in their eyes and I was theirs.

    Re: Hey, Stupid!

This morning I was feeding one of my groups. My big girl Honda lives in this enclosure. I've already posted about her and her wonderful attitude. I can't say that I caught this snake. It would be more honest to say she volunteered.
Well, while I was feeding some of the younger snakes I felt this tapping on my non feeding hand. I looked over and saw Honda banging her snout against my hand. She wasn't trying to bite and she wasn't wiping her face on me, which occurs sometimes. It wasn't even a strike. I grabbed a worm and offered it. She took it and while she was busy eating I began to feed more of the little ones. A few moments later I felt the tapping on my hand. It was Honda making another request for some food.
This snake is something else. Such an out going attitude. Wild just 6 months ago and now, well I'm not sure how to describe what she is. I know one thing, I'm looking forward to watching this snake grow old on the ranch. I'm blessed that she came and found me last Summer.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.
