I'm 'Merican so please forgive my grammar as well. The goal is always to communicate the best you can; then it's up to the receivers (that's us) to understand as best we can. You are doing just fine. I lived in the Philadelphia region for three years. My friends and colleagues were all pigeon people--most were old WW II pigeoneers who just happened to be of Italian origin. Do you know how many three hour lunches I ate with those wonderful Italian-American families? Way too many.
