Re: Looking for suggestions for my first garter :)

The prettiest blues I never seen in pictures were pugets.
Those I have seen in person have ranged all over the color spectrum.
Roachcrossing.com has his breeder female on display at one of our local reptile shows over the summer- gorgeous gal, very docile, and the little ones he had were brilliant blue.

For other species, the blue concinus Steve has is a real stunner in person, but blue in concinnus is like irridescence- the glow just doesn't show up in pictures.

Thamnophis is the genus, not a species .Anything that starts with Thamnophis is a always good start

If your not that fussed with flashy colours but still want an endeering pet, try radix, marcianus and sirtalis. They generally are placid (especially the females)and good all rounders (with a few exeptions to the rule as ever)

Agreed! I have 1.3 wildcaught similis and 1.1 cb and they never try to bite and seem to be pretty calm.

Okay, I think I'm going to start with at least one blue stripe, since they seem to be getting rave reviews.
I really love the pattern on the marcianus as well.

Marcianus are overall very docile and very eager eaters.
I have paired up two easterns with very agreeable temperaments- im hoping for good natured, hearty babies but time will tell.
My t. Butlerii female, Trax appears gravid, and she and her young tend to be very calm. Butlers are however, more delicate as youngsters.
I'll post if these breedings are sucessful- drop me a pm if the little ones look interesting to you.

Easterns have the widest range of morphs it seems. If you were planning on getting a pair (I'm assuming for breeding in the future?) then you have more choices with them. Plus all three of mine are very friendly.

On Scott Felzer's website there should be a list of a lot of species and their different morphs along with pictures if I'm not mistaken...

Scott is supposed to produce some blue red-sideds this year, but I've only seen the one picture of a scrub on his website. Not sure how the adults turn out.

I'm partial to pickeringii because I like the contrast of the blue on black. Blue concinnus are similar. The neon blue infernalis look really cool but are a bit more expensive than the other options.

Re: Looking for suggestions for my first garter :)

I would like to breed eventually, so I would like a pair. However, can you sex a snake as a baby? or should I be looking for adults if I want a m/f pair?
I think the red side is a bit out of my price range at the moment, since I would like to get more then one snake, and there seems to be other options that I like just as much.

Also what size do blue stripes and puget sounds get to about? I'm thinking tank sizes, and if I should just get two of both...I'm now drooling over all the snakes on that website
