Types Of Enclosures
There are several types of enclosures that can be used to house garter, ribbon and water snakes. Because the appropriate size of the enclosure is dependent upon the size of the snake(s) being kept and because the sizes of individuals in this group of snakes vary from 11/2 to 5 feet, a general formula will have to be used. It has been suggested that not only size, but the activity level of snakes also be considered when choosing the proper-size vivarium. Thus, it is recommended that the minimum enclosure size (L x W x H) be 2/3 to 11/2 times the length (L) of the snake x 1/3 the length of the snake for the width (W) x 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the snake for the height (H). With more than one snake, at least one foot should be added to the length of the enclosure for each additional animal. This means that for most garter snakes and water snakes, commer­cially sold vivarium 24 in. (10 gallons) to 36 in. long (30 to 40 gallons) will be adequate for maintaining single adult specimens.
