    Re: Favorite Search Engine

There is 1 thing I dislike about Google. They keeps years and years of records for every search any IP did on any day. At this moment, this information is only used in the battle against child pornography. (I believe it was the US government that asked them to give that information for the last 3 years. But don't shoot me if I'm wrong)

But you can do anything with this kind of information. And now anyone will probably say 'I have nothing to hide'. Although this might be true, but you can also do searches for the company you work for... very intersting info maybe for other companies.

And they do the same for gmail...

I know it's the way everything is evolving, like camera's in the cities and all... But I just don't like how everything is evolving in that direction. But hey, Google is the easiest and the best, so for now I stick with it. Maybe in the future I'll search for a better replacement.

I dislike it too. Most people have nothing to hide, but plenty to abuse. I have nothing to hide, so why should I let anyone keep track of my movements? It's not for any greater good, anyway.

However, I keep using Google despite disliking that particular issue. I think it's still worth it.

I couldn't care less about them watching me, what are they going to find out? That I'm a snake freak?

For example. I know a lot of local collectors are less than enthusiastic about letting people know that they even have a collection. It's rare, but break-ins do happen and usually they are after some specific animal.

And as we all know, people will always be prepared to pay for information. I know it's a bit on the paranoid side, but it's also a reminder that almost any kind of information can be abused.

I have been wanting to really jump into the conversation, and can not hold back any longer. I have always had a problem with what information companies are collecting. While we might think about it as useless information, there are may ways information can be used. A while back, AOL released "the search histories of more than 650,000 of its users", and the result were shocking. It became a nightmare for AOL, and one of the major privacy scandals last year." The information that was collected, was shocking to say the least, and in more then one case people were able to track down the person who entered the search requests, even thou the file only listed searches by a unique ID number. You can read the story at AOL's disturbing glimpse into users' lives | CNET News.com
