Found this little guy on my front door this afternoon. He had a tick problem as you can see in the picture. Word must have gotten out that I am offering a safe home for reptiles.

I didn't have any tweezers and it took me a good half hour to get em off using a knife and a fingure nail. Luckily the brave little fella seemed to understand that I was trying to help and cooperated nicely. May keep him for a while, just to make sure he recovers of course.

Five lined skink. No idea what the scientific name might be.

    Plestiodon(Eumeces) fasciatus. If you're sure it's a five-lined skink.

Beautiful skink. I found that they really like small running spiders or other soft insects with lots of movement. They like to chase their food. If you're keeping him, don't forget to provide moist places with moss, leaves, and plenty of cover.

I got rid of mites and ticks on them by rubbing them with a cat flea collar and it apparently didn't harm the lizard. I also placed pieces of the collar in their enclosure, inside a small container with tiny holes in it. A couple of months later, the ticks were all gone and never returned.

The name Five-lined Skink can refer to different species of skinks: Plestiodon fasciatus, the Eastern Red-headed Skink of North America and Western skinks.
Mine were the western version caught in the mountains of NE California.

If your skink doesn't have 5 stripes, it's probably a different but closely related skink. I like them. It's fun to put a fluttering moth in their enclosure and watch their antics as they try to catch it.

I'm pretty sure you have a Eumeces tetragrammus there. (4 lined skink)

You could be right I will count the lines when I get home. I saw a picture of the five lined skink online and it looked exactly like it (ie yellow lines blue tail) didn't realize that there was a four lined variety as well.

I will have the collar thing next time (i tried vegetable oil based on someones post on this site but it didn't work), it sure was a pain to try to get them off by hand when dealing with ticks the size of a pinhead and a fragile little skink. I was just going to keep on some paper towels for now, with a few things to hide under. Not sure how much of a danger infection poses at this point but I was trying to keep the enclosure as clean as possible.

    Baby Fox Snake

The T.radix Ranch had a first occur this morning. A baby Fox Snake hatched out. The mother of this baby was brought to me by another Deputy. 2 days after she arrived she laid a clutch of eggs. This gave me a chance to use my new Father's Day gift from my kids. The eggs started off looking pretty good but slowly the ones on the outside started changing colors and drying out. I kept a close eye on the humidity and so I don't think it was anything I did(hope not). Only 2 eggs still looked viable so I was hoping we'd get at least a couple new babies. I still think we might see another snake soon.
