All of our garters have roommates.
If your fingers smell of fish or worm or pinky, any garter may nip at you.
My BP on the other hand, he's nearly 4 feet long and about an inch and a half girth, when he strikes (always during feeding) it smarts.

As Stefan said, Garters of similar size are quite safe to keep in groups, Deborah. Accidental cannibalism isn't unheard of, but is more common in the very young. Deliberate cannibalism isn't so rare in T. e. vagrans, so maybe best to keep these singly. Originally Posted by deborahbroadus

and just an example of diferent temperment within the same sub species i once found 2 babies not 2 feet from eachother one kept trying to bite me and the other just musked

I should just add that my experience is limited to captive specimens only. I've never seen a Garter in the wild. (yet)James.
