Funny, I was reading about toads the other day, and I found out that the longest known one in captivity lived 36(!!!) years, and was killed accidentally, so who knows how much more it could've gone?
I remember thinking exactly the same thing you did about the turtle!

how do you tell male from female??? females have short tails and long back nails????

mature males have the long claws, not females. males also have a big THICK tail at the base, females have a skinny one. You can't really tell as babyies though

o really????? why don't females have to dig the whole???? how can they do that with short nails????

They big claws are on the FRONT legs of the male.. used for 'tickling' during mating.... I might grow mine.
